Kenya and Portugal reaffirm commitment to deepening bilateral partnership

Kenya and Portugal reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations across trade, investment and diplomatic cooperation.

Kenya’s Director General for Political and Diplomatic Affairs met Portugal’s newly-arrived Ambassador in Nairobi to chart the next phase of the two countries’ partnership.

The two sides identified priority areas including trade and investment, air connectivity, cooperation in the Blue Economy, and language training. Although diplomatic relations date back to 1977, bilateral trade remains modest, valued at under US$23 million in 2024.

Officials noted Portugal’s value as a European Union member and gateway for Kenyan business into European markets, while Kenya offers Portuguese firms access to East African and continental trade. The meeting built on the visit of Portugal’s Foreign Minister in April 2026.
